Ok. Ik ben een beetje ouderwets. Dat wil zeggen: ik probeer me, (misschien net als jij?), krampachtig vast te houden aan wat ik ken en ik accepteer slechts met moeite nieuwe dingen. Maar soms móet je wel…

Vroeger (vroegah, toen een rijles nog tien gulden kostte) gebruikte @XS4ALL die mooie Speedtouch modems van Thomson. Het heeft even geduurd, maar daar hebben we met wat onderzoek een mooie en vooral goed werkende oplossing mee kunnen bouwen. Ik vind dat een (DSL-)modem vooral een modem moet zijn en niet veel meer dan dat. Als een modem goed modemt, dan mag je allang blij zijn. Beveiliging is een race tegen de klok en een WiFi-router die je vandaag koopt, moet je over een jaar alweer vervangen, omdat het draadloze beveiligingssysteem onveilig blijkt. Ik zie geen reden waarom je dan weer op zoek zou moeten naar een nieuw modem. Mijn advies: Koppel ze dus los. Gebruik je modem om enkel contact te maken met je provider en kies zelf een draadloze router die je prettig vindt.

Goed. De eerste Speedtouches hadden slechts één netwerkpoort en geen draadloze ondersteuning. Later werden dat meer poorten en uiteindelijk ook draadloos en zelfs VoIP, maar dat heeft de pret nooit mogen drukken. Het onderzoek dat wij in deze apparaten hadden gestoken, bleef van waarde, omdat we met het oudste en met het nieuwste apparaat dezelfde goede oplossing konden bouwen. Namelijk: De Speedtouch als “dom” modem en daarachter ofwel een WiFi-router naar keuze, of zelfs een firewall! Ik zal je de ingewikkelde technische meuk besparen, maar het komt er op neer dat de Speedtouch het WAN-IP-adres van @XS4ALL kan “overdragen” naar het achtergelegen apparaat, je WiFi-router of firewall. Dat heet in goed Nederlands DHCP spoofing. Ok. Geen technische termen meer. Klik hier als je meer wilt weten over DHCP spoofing.

Inmiddels is het 2009 en kost een rijles allang geen tien gulden meer. @XS4ALL heeft besloten voortaan de Fritz!Box van het Duitse AVM te verstrekken met haar ADSL-aansluitingen. Ik had daar mijn twijfels over, maar goed. Onbekend is onbemind, dus heb ik besloten het maar te proberen. Tenslotte beschikt ons kantoor over een onuitputtelijke voorraad Speedtouch-modems, dus ik kon altijd nog wisselen naar het bekende recept.

De AVM Fritz!Box Fon WLAN 7170, zoals-ie officieel heet, is, net als de andere ADSL-modems, verkrijgbaar in twee smaken, Annex A en Annex B. Let hier goed op, als je ondersteuning zoekt, want het zijn twee verschillende apparaten.

Tot mijn spijt is de 7170 een modem en WiFi-router gecombineerd in één en het duurde niet lang, voordat ik problemen kreeg. Regelmatig viel het draadloze netwerk uit. Kom op, Dae! Niet meteen naar de Speedtouch en de Linksys WRT54GL met DD-WRT grijpen!

Ik ging dus kijken of ik het met de Fritz!Box kon oplossen. Gelukkig neemt internetprovider @XS4ALL zijn eigen vak serieus en zijn ze vertegenwoordigd op Twitter. Dat betekent dat ik op laagdrempelige wijze contact met ze kan krijgen, zonder me daarbij te storen aan hun sluitingstijden, pieperdienst in het weekend etc etc. Ik stuurde een tweet naar @XS4ALL:

De laatst beschikbare officiële firmwareversie voor mijn Annex B was 29.04.67 en ik ging hem upgraden naar beta-versie 29.04.68-14579 die @XS4ALL voor het gemak in de tweet had gelinkt. Dat leek goed te gaan, totdat ik op allerlei vertraging in mijn internetverkeer stuitte. Jammer!
Ten einde raad besloot ik de Duitse software voor mijn Annex B uit te proberen, waarvan ik melding maakte op Twitter:

Ik beloofde @XS4ALL mijn bevindingen te delen (doe ik nu) en ondertussen blijf ik hangen op de beta-software van @XS4ALL. Ik heb inmiddels alle onnodige toeters en bellen uitgeschakeld en het lijkt nu te werken. De vertraging is in ieder geval weg, maar ik blijf op mijn hoede… Wordt vervolgd!

Heb je een Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server die krap in de schijfruimte zit en heb je pas ontdekt dat de MDBDATA-directory vol staat met een heleboel Exxxxxxx.LOG bestanden (elk 5MB groot), dan is het volgende artikel (Engels) wellicht voor jou.

Immers: Een goede backup van je Microsoft Exchange database zou automatisch de logbestanden moeten opschonen (als alles in orde is, zou je backupsoftware de onnodige logbestanden moeten verwijderen). Als er ergens een kink in de kabel zit, dan moet je A. kijken welke logbestanden nog nodig zijn, B. verwijder de onnodige logbestanden en tenslotte: C. controleer je backupsoftware. Er is iets mis! Het kan zijn dat er inmiddels updates voor je backupsoftware zijn en dat je dat nog niet hebt opgemerkt… Controleer regelmatig of er updates voor je backsoftware zijn en hou je MDBDATA-directory goed in de gaten. Eerder schreef ik over TetherBerry. Helaas draait-ie niet op mijn BlackBerry Bold met OS 4.6.0.266. Ik heb hem al gedowngrade naar 4.6.0.247, maar ook dat mocht niet baten.

De afdeling Support van TetherBerry heeft me een link gestuurd naar betasoftware, om te kijken of het daarmee misschien werkt. Cool!

When you’re an Apple iPhone Developer running Windows, you will find that Apple posts its beta’s as DMG files (iphone_os_3.0_beta_3__iphone_3g__7a280f.dmg), which Windows doesn’t handle by default. You may need PowerISO to extract the IPSW file within it and feed it to your iTunes, holding the Shift key and clicking the Restore button in iTunes…

Remember that PowerISO doesn’t automatically register DMG files, so you have to manually start PowerISO and drag the DMG file into it, which will then give you the ability to extract the IPSW file. Happy hacking!

I recently dealt with a virtual server, running on a Microsoft Hyper-V Server host (the free version), which needed a lot of TEMP disk space during backup. The VHD file that the guest was running in needed to be resized to make more space. The file was 94 GB. I tried to make it a big bigger and resize it to 104 GB.

The instructions for this proces are simple:

1. Shut down the guest
2. Edit the guest properties and
3. enlarge the disk (enlarge the VHD file)
4. Bring the guest back online

Sounds simple, right? Here’s what went wrong:
The disk resize operation took a few seconds and the Hyper-V Server reported that something went wrong. After the failed disk resize the VHD file had become corrupt and the guest could not be started again!

Strange fact was that I was able to mount the VHD with WinImage and I was even able to extract file from the VHD. Basically a VHD file is a big file that holds an image of a hard disk (like an ISO file. When you burn an ISO file to CD or DVD the raw content of the ISO file is written to the CD, so your computer can recognize the files). If WinImage can read the file, why couldn’t I get Hyper-V Server to read it? When trying to start the guest Hyper-V Server reported an error within a few seconds and I couldn’t imagine anything severe being wrong with the file (just the guest server had become unstartable). What was wrong?!?!

I spent a night trying to figure what had gone wrong and trying to solve this mystery. During this night I made lots of backups of the VHD file. I tried converting it from VHD to VHD (maybe that would repair the file or unfold the mystery of the VHD that had suddenly become corrupt). Be advised: copying a 100 GB file from SCSI to USB takes forever and you need to use this time to figure out different scenario’s.

Lots and lots of articles, tools, questions asked in forums and lots and lots of answers, more tools and lots of suggestions, testdisk, partition tools, but I was sure there was nothing wrong with my file, but Hyper-V was wrong!

I converted the VHD to a VDMK file (VMWare’s hard disk format), trying to make it accessible by VMWare ESXi (the free version). The problem with VMWare ESXi is that it’s impossible (believe me, I tried!) to locally transfer a VDMK file from a USB drive onto the ESXi server. I hacked into the ESXi console (type in unsupported at TTY1, hit Enter and log in as root and then, try connect the USB drive, try to find the right /dev/device to mount and try a local file transfer; nothing worked!). Uploading it from a laptop or other PC (or SCP/SSH) simply takes too long just to figure out if it works. I tried connecting my laptop to the host (which I reinstalled with ESXi, after backing up the backup file of the VHD) and I ran into all sorts of trouble with Gigabit Speed-and-Duplex-Autodetect. In the end I had an ESXi host with a gigabit NIC, a laptop with a gigabit NIC, a crossover cable, all settings to Manual, 1 Gbps Full Duplex and yet the connection between the two was only 100 Mbps. Uploading at this speed would take forever and I was forced to come up with another plan…

By this time I got rid of the ESXi and went to Hyper-V based on the “real” Windows 2008 Server, which allowed more direct interaction between the host and the guest. Having a Vista Management PC between the two simply “doesn’t make things easier”. Believe me, guys: The Full Featured Windows 2008 Server Standard has built-in Hyper-V functionality (you need to install the Role, though) and it is well worth the money!

As time went by the birds outside were waknig up and I ran into an online article that suggested to do the following:

1. Create a new guest on the Hyper-V host
2. Point to the VHD file that you’re trying to repair
3. During this process you have an addition option that lets you Edit the VHD file
4. and the $1M issue: The Edit button allows you to change the VHD type from Fixed to Dynamic!

Yes, people! When you create a VHD file, your instinct tells you that a Fixed VHD file gives you more performance and stability. The general opinion is that Dynamic VHD files should be avoided, as the file needs to grow when the guest that ‘lives’ in it grows and that takes performance of your host and guest.

After converting the VHD from Fixed to Dynamic the guest was suddenly not corrupt anymore (?!?!) and the guest was startable and worked like a charm! Don’t ask me why you need to Create a New VM for this, but it takes a Hyper-V (free or paid version) seconds to destroy a Fixed VHD file and it took me hours to find out that converting it from Fixed to Dynamic would make it mountable by Hyper-V!

I would call this a bug or an unwanted feature. Anyway: The server was up, the sun was, too and I went to bed.

I don’t wish anybody a corrupt VHD file, but in case you run into one: I hope my story is a life saver! Don’t be shy and leave a comment if it did Happy hacking!

For those of you who like to keep their BlackBerry up-to-date: here’s the HOWTO.

First, make sure you have a BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed. Version 4.7 is the current version. If you don’t have it yet, check Google:

If you have the choice between a version with Media Manager or without, get the one without the Media Manager; it’s a lot smaller and the BlackBerry download server is not the fastest one I’ve seen… Who needs a Media Manager anyway? Do you want the Desktop Manager in your own language, or will plain English do? If you get the English-only version, the download will be smaller, too.

Once you have the Desktop Manager (install it!), get the latest firmware version for your BlackBerry. You’ll see that most of the telecom operators don’t have new firmware available, which is why creativity is important.

Get the firmware file for your BlackBerry model (for instance: if you have a BlackBerry 9000 Bold, you may want to get version 4.6.0.247 from http://tinyurl.com/dycmuo). The mobile operator you get this file from is irrelevant, because there’s a file called Vendor.xml, which contains the codes for every mobile operator. Once you delete this file (install the firmware file first), there are no limitations anymore and the file will install, regardless of your mobile operator! Vendor.xml is located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\AppLoader. Delete the file (or rename it, if that makes you feel better). Make sure to use an elevated Command Prompt in case you’re using Windows Vista with UAC enabled. (otherwise it won’t work). Make sure to get the MultiLanguage version of your firmware file, in case you have a choice. There are some mobile operators who offer Chinese only firmware files and we don’t want those, unless you want a Chinese BlackBerry

Now you’re ready for the update process!
Start the Desktop Manager, connect your BlackBerry to your PC and the Desktop Manager should inform you about newer software available for your BlackBerry!

If this doesn’t happen, you either failed to remove the Vendor.xml file or you got the wrong firmware file (make sure to get the right firmware file for your BlackBerry).

WHATEVER HAPPENS, DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR BLACKBERRY DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS!

The message “Connecting to device” takes longer than you might thing necessary, but it is, so don’t unplug your BlackBerry and wait patiently for the sun to go down and up again

If you do unplug your BlackBerry during the upgrade process, you might end up with a bricked (a dead) BlackBerry. I do have a HOWTO for recovering your dead BlackBerry, but it’s better if you don’t need it
It happened to me once (I did get away with it once), when I was trying to flash from Windows 7 beta 7000. Don’t try that… Use Vista or XP instead!

Sinds Exchange 2003 (Standard) Server Service Pack 2 kan je Message Store maximaal 75 GB groot worden, alleen moet je hiervoor een kleine aanpassing maken aan de registry (en even de Information Store Service herstarten). Lees in het artikel van Microsoft hoe dit moet. Succes!

Houd er rekening mee, dat het om het verhogen van een softwarematige beperking gaat. Als je schijfruimte ontoereikend is, zal je Information Store Service er evengoed regelmatig mee stoppen…

Wil je snel en makkelijk de Administrator alle rechten geven op alle mailboxen op een Exchange 2007 systeem?
Plak dan het volgende tekstje in de Exchange Management Shell:

Get-Mailbox | Add-MailboxPermission -User ‘JOUW_DOMEIN\administrator’ -AccessRights ‘FullAccess’

Daarna kun je met behulp van cmdlet het Export-Mailbox de mailbox van je vertrokken collega bij een achtergebleven collega inplakken. Bij voorbeeld als volgt:

Ernst van Altena vertelt over zijn kruistocht voor gebruik van open source en open standaarden binnen de Gemeente Heemskerk. Dat heeft de Gemeente Heemskerk niet alleen gedaan, maar in samenwerking met de omringende gemeenten Beverwijk, Uitgeest, Velsen en Castricum, verenigd in de samenwerkingsregio IJmond (slim bedacht!).

Deze gemeenten hebben de handen ineengeslagen om gezamenlijk hun websites aan te pakken en op één lijn te krijgen. Na wijs en langdurig beraad is hun keuze gevallen op TYPO3.

Na afloop van zijn presentatie bleef ik in tweestrijd achter. Aan de ene kant hoorde ik de frustratie van jarenlang lobbyen binnen de gemeenten voor het gebruik van open source en open standaarden, terwijl er op politiek vlak een volslagen gebrek was (en is?) aan visie, kennis en daadkracht om datgene te doen wat er moet gebeuren en tegelijkertijd gloeide er een vonkje van hoop in mijn hart dat er tenminste iemand is binnen die gemeenten die blijkbaar wèl beschikt over visie, kennis en tenminste de geval goede wil om zich in te zetten voor datgene wat nodig is…

Ik moet hier nog even over nadenken en ik hoop dat ik tijdens de volgende sessie Nederland Open in Verbinding van het ministerie van Economische Zaken tot een eindoordeel kan komen over de stand van ons land.

Is Nederland werkelijk een land zonder visie, of valt het mee en zijn de tijden aan het veranderen?

In een sessie met een hoog entertainmentgehalte doet Mitch Pirtle uit de doeken wat hij heeft gedaan om Joomla! highly scalable te krijgen. Ik had de indruk dat zijn verhaal hier en daar iets technischer was dan de bezoekers vandaag (het is immers Businessdag en zijn presentatie was erg technisch), maar hij gaf -zelfs conceptueel- een mooi beeld van alle geweldige techniek. Gelukkig is Mitch er morgen ook en dan is het Communitydag!

Het is duidelijk merkbaar dat Mitch een Amerikaan is en dat Amerikanen anders (beter!) presenteren dan Nederlanders. De toon en het tempo van zijn presentatie vond ik een aanwinst voor de Joomla!dagen en ik kan niet wachten om hem nader aan de tand te voelen.

Handig voor als je BlackBerries geen e-mail willen verzenden…

Het (oudere) Speedtouch 510 modem kun je gebruiken als firewall. Het beschikt over een telnet interface waarover je firewall regels kunt manipuleren. Handig, als je een bijvoorbeeld een uitgaande port wilt blokkeren.

Om bijvoorbeld de uitgaande TCP port 3724 (World of Warcraft port) te blokkeren:
